Vol. 483 No. 3

Written Answers. - Carbon Tax.

John Gormley

Question:

273 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he has discussed the possibility of introducing a carbon tax with the Department of Finance. [20304/97]

I have not discussed the introduction of a carbon energy tax with the Minister for Finance, but may do so in the context of a consultancy report, which is due to be completed shortly, on policies and measures for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. I have, however, been in contact with the Minister for Finance regarding proposals for restructuring the Community framework for the taxation of energy products which is currently being discussed at EU level.
