Vol. 483 No. 6

Written Answers. - Court Proceedings.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

443 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of cases brought to court which the State has failed to secure a prosecution for in the period 30 June 1997 to date in 1997; the reason in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21577/97]

Information relating to court proceedings and convictions is compiled, in due course, by the Garda Síochána and is published in its annual report, copies of which are made available in the Oireachtas Library. The report for 1997 will be published next year. In the meantime it is not practicable to extract even provisional information for the period referred to by the Deputy. There can be a wide variety of reasons why convictions may not be obtained and it is not possible to generalise about them.
