Question:

310 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of extra gardaí being drafted in to Dublin city to support the city's Operation Freeflow. [21914/97]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 306 to 310, inclusive, together.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that 162 gardaí from the Garda college were allocated on a temporary basis to the Dublin Metropolitan area from 5 December 1995 to 5 January 1998. They are being deployed to ensure that the specific enforcement measures necessary to the success of Operation Freeflow are carried out.

I am also informed by the Garda authorities that they have no plans to draft extra gardaí over the Christmas period into the other cities referred to by the Deputy. Garda plans to deal with the traffic situation in these cities are drawn up at a local level having regard to the local traffic conditions, available Garda resources, and after consultation with the various interested parties. Any extra demands will be met from existing resources as in previous years.
