Vol. 484 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Funding.

Michael D'Arcy

Question:

362 Mr. D'Arcy asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason a school (details supplied) in County Wexford did not receive the same grant aid as any other second level school of the same kind. [21925/97]

The school in question is funded on the same basis as any other voluntary secondary school in the free education scheme. Under the scheme, my Department meets the cost of teacher salaries and allowances and makes an annual per capita grant towards the recurrent costs of schools. An enhanced per capita grant is payable to schools which have disadvantaged status. In addition, schools may also be eligible for assistance under a range of other grants available under the scheme, including grants for the employment of caretakers and secretaries, purchase of school books and certain curricular support grants.
