Vol. 484 No. 3

Written Answers. - Inward Investment.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

117 Mr. Durkan asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the measures, if any, she proposes to maintain Ireland as an attractive investment location; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [22310/97]

The best way to maintain Ireland's position as an attractive investment location is to ensure that we continue to upgrade our competitiveness across all aspects of the business environment. This involves not just being cost competitive, but also requires a ready supply of skilled labour, efficient and effective public utilities, modern infrastructure, a flexible and responsive education system and a taxation system which rewards enterprise, at both the individual and corporate levels.

I refer the Deputy to my reply of 6 November to a question from Deputy Quinn in which I reminded Deputies that responsibility for maintaining the competitive position of the economy cannot be confined to any one Department of State. In this regard, the Government is committed to ensuring that Ireland's competitiveness as a location for investment is continually upgraded and I draw the Deputy's attention to the range of pro-enterprise measures announced in the budget.
