Vol. 485 No. 2

Written Answers. - Hospital Waiting Lists.

Tony Killeen

Question:

220 Mr. Killeen asked the Minister for Health and Children the reason a person (details supplied) in County Clare, who is aged 83 and living alone, has been refused admission to a regional hospital (details supplied) in spite of the fact that he is on a priority list for surgery; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the admission date was for 1 December 1997 and that the patient has had recurrent infections while awaiting admission; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22976/97]

The provision of medical treatment to people resident in County Clare is the statutory responsibility of the Mid-Western Health Board. My Department asked the chief executive officer of the Mid-Western Health Board to investigate the position in relation to this case and has been informed that due to a major building programme Limerick Regional Hospital is at present operating with 30 beds less than its full capacity. All patients who are planned for elective admissions are requested to contact the hospital's admissions office on the morning of their expected admission to ensure there is a bed available.

With regard to the specific case referred to by the Deputy, the board has confirmed that this person was informed that his date for admission had been deferred for the reasons stated above. His family were told that if he had any problems in the meantime to go to the hospital's accident and emergency department and whatever action necessary would be taken. The board has indicated that the person has been offered a further date for admission prior to Christmas.
