Vol. 485 No. 2

Written Answers. - Day Care Centres.

David Stanton

Question:

243 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Health and Children the amount of money, if any, allocated by his Department towards the capital cost of building a day care centre in Midleton, County Cork; if so, the date on which the decision to make this allocation was made; the procedures for payment of this money; the body to which it will be paid; and when the building will commence. [23152/97]

In a letter dated 18 June, 1996 from this Department to the Southern Health Board it was stated that a total capital sum of £94,000 was available in 1996 for day care centres about to be built at Bandon and Midleton, i.e. £94,000 between the two.

This arrangement was superseded by a departmental letter dated 27 June 1997 which stated that a total of £160,000 capital funding was available in 1997 for the two above-mentioned projects, with £100,000 being specified for Midleton and £60,000 for Bandon. It was given to understand that the funding would be released to the voluntary group in Midleton, via the Southern Health Board, as soon as receipts/invoices for work done had been submitted. To date none of this funding has been drawn down.

I am happy to state that a further and final moiety of £50,000 towards the Midleton day care project will be made available in 1998, making a total of £150,000 available for the project.

I understand that a meeting between officers of the Southern Health Board and members of the voluntary group Midleton Day Care Centre Ltd. is imminent. I am confident that outstanding issues will be resolved at this meeting and that commencement of actual building work cannot be far away.
