Vol. 485 No. 2

Written Answers. - Breaking the Cycle Scheme.

John Bruton

Question:

340 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science the plans, if any, he has to include schools in County Meath in the breaking the cycle project. [23536/97]

Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Question:

371 Mrs. B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will indicate the proposals, if any, he has regarding breaking the cycle for disadvantaged schools; if he intends to continue this programme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23046/97]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 340 and 371 together.

The breaking the cycle pilot project is being closely monitored by my Department's inspectorate and the education research centre has been commissioned to evaluate the project. The outcome of the evaluation will provide a basis for considering future developments in supports for disadvantaged areas.

I am also currently considering a range of options for future provision to combat educational disadvantage.
