Question:

349 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of teachers at primary level from September 1998 for which pay provision is being made in the 1998 Estimates; and how this compares with the number of teachers on the books in September 1997. [22741/97]

The number of primary teaching posts warranted in primary schools in September 1997 was approximately 21,100.

In the 1998 Estimates, provision has been made for payment of a similar number of teachers from September 1998.

350 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of teachers at secondary level from September 1998 for which pay provision is being made in the 1998 Estimates; and how this compares with the number of teachers on the books in September 1997. [22742/97]

The whole-time teacher equivalents at second level for the school year 1997-98 is approximately 25,100. Provision has been made in the 1998 Estimates for this figure to increase to approximately 25,300 in September 1998.
