Vol. 485 No. 2

Written Answers. - Teachers' Allowances.

Michael Noonan

Question:

359 Mr. Noonan asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will award the equivalent of the H. Dip allowance to certain metal work and wood work teachers who qualified from a three year course at the University of Limerick; the reason he refuses to correct this anomaly; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22884/97]

The terms of the agreement on the pay and conditions of teachers under the PCW agreement extend the payment of the H. Dip. allowance to all specialist teachers of certain subjects, including metal work and woodwork, who hold a four year concurrent degree which includes a qualification in the theory and practice of education.

The agreement also provides for the establishment of agreed procedures for dealing with appeals for the payment of allowances in respect of qualifications. These procedures are being established in consultation with the management and teacher interests and are expected to be operational in the near future.

If the Deputy has a specific case in mind and supplies me with the precise details, I will arrange to have the matter investigated and advise him of the outcome as soon as possible.
