Vol. 485 No. 2

Written Answers. - Special Services.

Dan Neville

Question:

380 Mr. Neville asked the Minister for Education and Science the special services, if any, there are available to national schools to accommodate pupils who are blind particularly in the case of a child joining the pupils of an ordinary two teacher school. [23123/97]

Children with visual impairment attending ordinary primary schools are supported by the visiting teacher service which includes specialists in the area of visual impairment. Such children may also have access to support from remedial or resource teachers.

My Department also provides specialised equipment, as resources permit, such as brailler, closed circuit televisions and computers, to assist children with visual impairment enrolled in primary schools. The provision of such equipment is arranged through the visiting teacher service.

I am currently reviewing provision across the entire special needs area to ensure that all available resources are utilised to maximum effect. I assure the Deputy that the needs of children with visual impairment will form part of this review.
