Vol. 485 No. 2

Written Answers. - Education Centres.

Emmet Stagg

Question:

383 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the fact that full time directors have been appointed to all the full-time education centres in the country with the exception of Sligo; if his attention has further been drawn to the growing concern among teachers in the Sligo region regarding the failure of his Department to carry out its decision of 18 October 1996 to upgrade the Sligo centre; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23126/97]

I am aware of the matter raised by the Deputy.

Sligo Education Centre is currently funded by my Department on the basis of having a part-time director. The appointment of a full-time director is a matter for the management committee of the centre in the first instance. Officers of my Department are in contact with the centre on this issue.

Teachers in Sligo can avail of the services provided by the Sligo centre. There are also three other full-time centres in the general area — at Donegal (town), Carrick-on-Shannon and Castlebar — which can provide assistance and service.
