Vol. 485 No. 3

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Accommodation.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

137 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Defence if he has satisfied himself that the standard of military quarters is in accordance with modern expectations; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23316/97]

Substantial financial provision is made in the building and engineering subhead of my Department's Vote for the maintenance, upgrading and construction of quarters for military personnel. For example, during 1995-96 a sum of approximately £900,000 was spent on refurbishing two accommodation blocks at the Curragh Camp for non-commissioned personnel; in 1996 a sum of approximately £500,000 was spent on similar accommodation refurbishment in Collins Barracks, Cork; and in 1997 a contract valued at about £800,000 was placed for the construction of a new accommodation block at Finner Camp.

My Department will continue to pursue a programme for the provision of modern living accommodation for the Defence Forces.
