Vol. 485 No. 4

Written Answers. - Local Authority Housing.

Question:

151 Mr. Hayes asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will give details of a meeting which took place on 12 December 1997 between officials of his Department and a variety of local officials from Carlow County Council and Carlow Urban District Council regarding the proposed housing schemes at George Bernard Shaw Park in Carlow; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23448/97]

Question:

152 Mr. Hayes asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the number of occasions, if any, he has made a decision to overturn housing projects and schemes which have had the support of local authorities; the reason his decision was made in each case; the total number of decisions made by him since he took office which had the effect of overturning housing scheme approvals made by his predecessor; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23449/97]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 151 and 152 together.

Decisions made by me since taking office have not had the effect of preventing any housing scheme from proceeding.

I refer the Deputy to my contribution in Private Members' time on 16 December in which I explained my concerns in relation to proposals to build houses at Shaw Park in Carlow and the action I took, including the meeting in Carlow on 12 December, to resolve the situation before deciding to give the go-ahead to the proposals.
