Question:

165 Mr. Stanton asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the number of fatalities in the construction industry for each of the years from 1980 to date in 1998. [1364/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 164 and 165 together.

Notifications of both fatal and non-fatal accidents are made directly to the Health and Safety Authority which is the State-sponsored body with responsibility for the enforcement of occupational safety and health legislation. Information on the number of fatal and non-fatal accidents, and also information on the sectors in which accidents have occurred, are contained in the annual reports of the authority. These annual reports are presented to the Houses of the Oireachtas. Prior to the establishment of the Health and Safety Authority in 1989 information on accidents and fatalities was contained in the annual labour inspectorate reports which were also laid before the Houses of the Oireachtas.
