228 Mr. Finucane asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources when the introduction of carcase tagging and quota measures will be implemented in order to assist in the preservation of wild salmon stocks. [1490/98]
I intend to publish shortly and circulate directly to all interested parties the technical report commissioned from the Marine Institute into the practical implementation of salmon tagging and quota measures. This consultative process will allow all concerned to make their views known on the specific issues, programmes and timetables for action inherent in progressing these proposals. In the meantime my decision to review the salmon conservation measures for 1998 confirms the ongoing commitment to reducing fishing effort and complements current work on this next phase of salmon management strategies.
