354 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Defence the action, if any, being put in place to reduce the losses incurred by the Army Canteen Board in recent years particularly in view of the non inclusion of the actual staff costs of the canteens and messes; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Minister for Defence (Mr. M. Smith):

Every effort is made by the Defence Forces Canteen Board to reduce the operating losses incurred by the board. The board's operating losses which have been reducing gradually over recent years were £272,306 in 1991 and £180,248 in 1996.
