Vol. 486 No. 1

Written Answers. - Registration of Chiropodists.

Pádraic McCormack

Question:

585 Mr. McCormack asked the Minister for Health and Children the proposals, if any, there are to introduce legislation for the State registration of chiropodists; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1761/98]

The current initiative on Statutory Registration commenced in 1995 when officials of my Department held a one-day information workshop on "The Statutory Registration of Certain Designated Health and Social Professions" in Dublin Castle. The workshop provided a forum for discussion on the possible introduction of legislation which would allow for the regulation and control of a number of professions with a view to the maintenance of a high standard of professional education and conduct amongst registered members of those professions, and so to protect the public. Representatives of a wide range of professional bodies, including members of four groups which represent the interests of chiropodists, were in attendance.

Following this workshop, my Department circulated a consultative document for comment to the professional representative bodies which had attended. Comprehensive replies were received from these bodies and my Department has been considering what steps should be taken in order to advance matters. However, it has become necessary to defer further action pending the completion of other legislation currently being pursued by my Department.
