Vol. 486 No. 1

Written Answers. - Driving Licence Regulations.

Gay Mitchell

Question:

657 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will have examinations made into the case of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 8 and persons in the same category; if he will make an order bringing the law here into line with that in Britain in relation to epilepsy sufferers; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1692/98]

Directive 91/439/EEC on driving licences requires that regard must be had to the state of a person's epilepsy in considering the issue of or renewal of a driving licence. The directive cites a guideline of no epileptic seizure for the past two years and this provision is incorporated in driver licensing law in 13 EU member states, including Ireland.

While there is no proposal at present to change Irish regulations on the matter, my Department will continue to follow relevant developments in medical science and at EU level.
