Vol. 486 No. 1

Written Answers. - Recycling Schemes.

John Gormley

Question:

672 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government whether his Department has examined the concept of reverse vending machines as an incentive for increasing rates of recycling. [1964/98]

I assume that the question relates to machines into which consumers may deposit waste material (e.g. aluminium cans) and which give the consumer an opportunity to win a prize. I understand that such machines have been tested on a trial basis in Ireland with only limited success. There may be particular applications or locations at which such machines could be successfuly deployed; this would be a matter for recycling operators.
