Vol. 486 No. 1

Written Answers. - National Monuments.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

737 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands if her Department has satisfied itself that sufficient protection is being afforded to a listed 18 century abbey at Abbeystown, Ballisodare, County Sligo which is currently operating at a quarrying site; and the actions, if any, her Department will take on this matter. [2024/98]

The medieval abbey at Ballisodare, known as St. Fechin's Abbey, is located in an area of industrial activity. A preservation order was placed on the National Monument in 1994 in order to afford it the fullest possible protection under the National Monuments Acts, 1930 to 1994. The object of the order is to safeguard the abbey from destruction, injury or removal and it is therefore unlawful for anyone to interfere with the building.
