Question:

773 Mr. Hayes asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the total number of crimes committed in the Dublin 24 area in 1997 and in each of the five previous years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1660/98]

As the Deputy may be aware crime statistics are compiled with reference to Garda divisions and districts. As the Dublin 24 postal area comprises the general Tallaght area, the information requested is supplied with reference to the Tallaght Garda district.

*The Tallaght Garda District consists of Tallaght and Rathfarnham Garda Stations.
Final statistics for 1997 are not yet available but I understand that provisional figures indicate that there has been a decrease in the number of crimes reported and an increase in the detection rate when compared to 1996.
