Vol. 486 No. 1

Written Answers. - UN Convention on Marriage.

Dick Spring

Question:

780 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform when Ireland will ratify the UN Convention of 1962 on consent to marriage, minimum age for marriage and registration of marriage; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1775/98]

The Deputy will appreciate that signature on ratification by Ireland of an international agreement is a matter for decision by Government. The 1962 UN Convention, the subject matter of this question, has not been the subject of any Government decision to date. The convention would seem to have implications in particular for the Department of Social, Community and Family Affairs and I shall arrange to have the matter brought to the attention of that Department.
