Question:

796 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the total number of arrests made in the second half of 1997 in each of the districts in County Donegal; the percentage of these that were drug related; the percentage of those charged who have addresses outside the jurisdiction; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2110/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 795 and 796 together.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that information regarding the total number of arrests made in each of the Garda districts in Donegal and the addresses of persons charged is not readily available and could only be obtained by the expenditure of a disproportionate amount of Garda time and resources. It would, in fact, involve a manual inspection of the records of every station in the division.

Final crime statistics for 1997 are not yet available. Statistics for 1996 show that a total of 82 persons were prosecuted in the Garda division of Donegal under the Misuse of Drugs Acts.
