Vol. 486 No. 1

Written Answers. - Flood Relief.

Austin Deasy

Question:

101 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Finance if his Department will become involved in securing the embankment of the River Clodiagh between Portlaw and the River Suir in view of the serious breaches of the banks which has resulted in the flooding of hundreds of acres of land following recent heavy rains and the inability of private individuals to repair and prevent such breaches. [1899/98]

From preliminary inquiries it appears that maintenance of the embankments in question may be covered by Trust Funds set up by the Land Commission. These funds are in the possession of the public trustee, who is an official of the Department of Agriculture and Food. Inquiries are being made with the public trustee to clarify the matter and I will contact the Deputy again as soon as I hear from him.
