Vol. 486 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Placement.

Enda Kenny

Question:

877 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Education and Science the progress, if any, that has been made arising out of his reply to Parliamentary Question No. 321 answered on 21 October 1997; the extra facilities, if any, his Department propose to offer the school in question, so that the pupil in question can attend school; when he now expects the child to attend school; and if he will make arrangements that the necessary action be taken to deal with this matter forthwith. [1606/98]

My Department's psychological service and inspectorate, continue to be involved in this case in endeavouring to ensure that appropriate educational provision is made having regard to the boy's particular needs. It is clear that due to the acute nature of these needs, a highly supported school placement is required. Consultations are currently under way with County Mayo VEC concerning the provision of a care assistant to support a placement in a local school. I intend that these consultations will be concluded shortly. All efforts are being made to ensure that the boy resumes his education as quickly as possible.
