Michael Ring

Question:

919 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will reinstate the three hours of home tuition previously enjoyed by a cerebral palsy sufferer (details supplied) in County Mayo. [1852/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 918 and 919 together.

The purpose of the home tuition scheme is to provide compensatory instruction to pupils who suffer a major disruption in their school attendance as a result of a serious medical ailment. The scheme is not intended to provide supplementary instruction for children with a disability who attend school on a regular basis.

My Department's decision to terminate the home tuition allocation in this case was based on the student's ongoing good attendance record at school.

I understand that my Department's decision in this case is currently under appeal and that a decision will be taken on the matter in the near future.
