Question:

125 Mr. Finucane asked the Taoiseach the total output and value of the agriculture sector at the end of 1997; and the way in which the total output and value compares to the figures at the end of 1996. [2056/98]

The value of gross agricultural output in 1997 was provisionally estimated at £3,302 million. This was 6 per cent below the 1996 value of £3,514 million. Income from self-employment and other trading income* was estimated at £1,985 million in 1997. This was 5.1 per cent below the 1996 figure of £2,092 million.

*This represents the amount available to remunerate farmers, their families and other agricultural producers for their labour and management and to cover interest on borrowed capital.

Updated estimates for 1997 are due for release in early February.
