Vol. 486 No. 3

Order of Business (Resumed).

(Carlow-Kilkenny): Will the Taoiseach confirm if legislation will be introduced to confirm officially what the Minister for the Environment and Local Government did yesterday in effectively eliminating Carlow from the Republic by not giving it a penny under the 1998 scheme or under continuing schemes?

That matter does not arise on the Order of Business. The Deputy should table a question on it.

(Carlow-Kilkenny): It is a matter of importance for Carlow.

Mr. Hayes

The Minister of State, Deputy Molloy, is behind this.

Does the Taoiseach propose to make time available to discuss the Irish attitude in the United Nations towards the deteriorating situation in Iraq? Will there be an opportunity to hear the Irish position and that of like-minded nations on this matter as the situation deteriorates?

It is a matter for the Whips if Members wish to discuss it.

We have had a number of vague promises of legislative action if the Moriarty tribunal does not prove to be as efficient as the House would wish. Will the Taoiseach confirm if the reply given by the Tánaiste last night was a considered one, that for the purposes of the companies Acts the tribunal is a competent body to which she can refer.

That was discussed at length last week during Private Members' Business and does not arise on the Order of Business.

It is most unfortunate for the efficacious conduct of the business that the Chair should rise at this time.

Deputy Rabbitte, that matter does not arise on the Order of Business.

I was finishing my point. I am trying to establish if legislation is promised in this area. I am merely seeking to ask the Taoiseach has the Government established if the Tánaiste can refer the report of the authorised officer to the tribunal as she can refer it to the DPP. There are certain competent bodies under the Acts. I do not believe she was right last night, but she may well have got advice to the contrary. I am merely asking——

That matter does not arise on the Order of Business. I suggest the Deputy tables a question on the matter.

I shall take the Chair's advice, but perhaps the Taoiseach will clarify the question in the interim.

If the Deputy tables a question the matter will be clarified.
