Vol. 486 No. 3

Written Answers. - Inland Waterways.

Andrew Boylan

Question:

235 Mr. Boylan asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands if her attention has been drawn to the widespread interest in having navigation of the River Erne from Belturbet to Killeshandra thereby connecting the Ballinamore and Ballyconnell Canal development to lower Lough Erne and, in particular, Lough Oughter and Killykeen Forest Park Development; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [2495/98]

The waterways division of Dúchas, the heritage service of my Department, received tenders for the preliminary investigations forming part of an environmental impact study on this project. It was then decided to carry out further design work in order to give a more accurate estimate of the physical works and costs involved before proceeding to EIS and economic analysis. When these figures are available a decision will then be made concerning the next costs identified and the prospect of funding being available to carry out the project.
