Vol. 486 No. 3

Written Answers. - Local Authority Housing.

Emmet Stagg

Question:

98 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will institute a programme to ensure that all local authority houses have central heating installed by the end of the decade. [2446/98]

The management, maintenance and improvement of their existing dwellings, including the installation of central heating, is the responsibility of local authorities to be defrayed from their own resources. However, where capital funding is made available under the remedial works scheme to assist authorities in carrying out major structural works to designated housing estates, the installation of central heating in houses may form part of the works undertaken.

Local authorities were advised in February 1994 that full central heating should be provided in new local authority housing.
