Vol. 486 No. 3

Written Answers. - Naval Museum.

Seán Haughey

Question:

117 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Defence the plans, if any, he has to develop a naval museum (details supplied) in Cobh; the current position regarding historical items and materials already donated for this museum; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2443/98]

The Naval Museum is currently located in the Martello Tower at the Naval Base, Haulbowline. Certain refurbishment works were carried out to this premises in 1996. The museum houses a small collection of naval memorabilia and equipment. In addition, some items are on temporary loan to the National Maritime Museum in Dún Laoghaire, County Dublin. Ongoing refurbishment and improvement of the museum is carried out as resources permit.
