Vol. 486 No. 3

Written Answers. - Cattle Breed Societies.

Paul Bradford

Question:

154 Mr. Bradford asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the reason for the delay in the registration process for a cattle society (details supplied); and when the matter will be finalised. [2630/98]

My Department is in receipt of applications from two societies seeking approval to maintain a herd book for the Montbeliarde breed of cattle. In the course of evaluating these applications both societies were informed that the low pedigree population of the Montbeliarde breed in Ireland could not justify the approval of two separate herd books. My Department has had meetings with representatives of both organisations and I understand that considerable progress has now been made towards the amalgamation of the two groups into one cattle breed society. It is expected that when arrangements are finalised for the establishment of the new society, a fresh application will be submitted to my Department for approval of that body to maintain the herd book for the Montbeliarde breed and when that application is received it will be processed without delay.
