Question:

342 Ms Coughlan asked the Minister for Education and Science if he has carried out a survey of the weight of schoolbags; if his attention has been drawn to the many concerns expressed about the detrimental effect these bags have on young people's posture; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3393/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 315, 340 and 342 together.

I have set up a working group to examine problems arising from the weight of school bags. The working group is comprised of representatives of parents and teachers as well as medical professionals and representatives of the Department of Education and Science. The first meeting of the group was held on 9 October 1997. It is expected that the group will complete its report in the very near future.

This group is addressing all aspects of the problems posed by the weight of school bags, including any possible implications for the health of pupils. It will also formulate proposals to alleviate such problems.

When I receive the report I will consider what further action will be appropriate.
