Vol. 487 No. 1

Written Answers. - National Sports Stadium.

Austin Deasy

Question:

69 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation if the Government will commit itself to substantial financial aid for the national stadium to host international matches being planned by the Football Association of Ireland and the Irish Rugby Football Union in the Phoenix Park; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3460/98]

Although I am aware of various media reports there are, at present, no firm proposals before my Department for the development of a national outdoor sports stadium.

I stress that while the Government and I will be as receptive and as positive as possible, the initiative for national or regional sports facilities must come, in the first instance, from interested commercial and-or sporting interests and any such initiatives will, of course, have to demonstrate feasibility and commercial viability.
