Vol. 487 No. 3

Written Answers. - Rape Crisis Centres.

Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Question:

189 Mrs. B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will ensure that the Southern Health Board will allocate a substantial increase in funding to the Tralee Rape Crisis Centre, County Kerry, to ensure that the centre is in a position to carry out the huge volume of work that it has to deal with; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3855/98]

In line with a recommendation of the Second Commission on the Status of Women, arrangements have been put in place to ensure that secure multi-annual funding is provided through the health boards to rape crisis and sexual abuse counselling centre-services nationwide. I understand that Tralee Rape Crisis Centre received core funding of £50,000 from the Southern Health Board under these arrangements in 1997. Funding for 1998 is being considered by the health board in the context of other competing priorities for service developments.
