Vol. 487 No. 3

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefits.

Michael Creed

Question:

234 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs the proposals, if any, he has to reduce the age of qualification for old age contributory and non-contributory pensions to 65 years. [3849/98]

I have no proposals to reduce the pension age for old age contributory and non-contributory pension. The cost of reducing the pension age by one year is estimated to be in the order of £35 million in a full year. Any reduction in the pension age would have major financial implications and could be considered in a budgetary context.
