Vol. 487 No. 3

Written Answers. - Child Abuse.

Michael Ferris

Question:

284 Mr. Ferris asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation if he received recommendations from the IASA regarding who should chair the independent inquiry into the recent child abuses scandal; and if the chairperson he appointed was suggested in the IASA recommendation. [4195/98]

The Government decided on 10 February 1998, to appoint Dr. Roderick Murphy, S.C., to carry out an independent inquiry into matters relating to child sex abuse in swimming. The IASA was not consulted in relation to his appointment.

As the Deputy may be aware, however, prior to the Government's decision, the IASA was, itself, preparing to have an inquiry, carried out by an independent third party, into its structures and procedures. I understand that Dr. Murphy was not among the parties being considered by the IASA for that task.
