Vol. 487 No. 3

Written Answers. - Examination Appeals System.

John Perry

Question:

319 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will have arrangements made to review the leaving certificate examination results of a person (details supplied) as he has secured a very high mark in a Garda exam (details supplied) and was notified of the interview and medical, but has now been informed not to attend the Garda interview on the basis of his leaving certificate results; if he will use his discretion in this unique case; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3992/98]

In the interests of equity and fairness to the general body of students who sit the leaving certificate examination, reviews of results are confined to the framework of the appeal system. This system operates to very specific rules and procedures which deal with issues such as the date by which all applications for a review of a result must be received.

The Deputy will appreciate that consistency in the treatment of candidates is essential to the integrity of our examinations and for that reason it would be inappropriate for me as Minister to intervene in relation to an individual result.
