Vol. 487 No. 3

Written Answers. - Harbours and Piers.

Billy Timmins

Question:

42 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources his views on whether a major extension of Dunmore East harbour is urgently required to accommodate the increasing number of leisure and commercial fishing boats using the harbour; and if he will take an immediate initiative to have plans drawn up for this extension. [3929/98]

A consultancy study of infrastructural requirements at Dunmore East Harbour was commissioned by the local harbour users' committee and a report has been submitted to my Department for consideration. In addition, a technical wave study of the harbour has been commissioned by my Department and will be completed this year. Both studies will facilitate and inform an evaluation by my Department of development requirements for the harbour and the options for addressing those requirements.

I have also recently engaged engineering consultants to carry out remedial works to the south pier walls. This work, when complete, will provide accommodation for vessels in an area of the harbour which is currently unavailable for berthing.
