Vol. 487 No. 3

Written Answers. - Fishery Inspectorate.

Enda Kenny

Question:

56 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if he will demand that the Fishery Inspectorate, whose job it is to inspect catches, be drawn from other member states, in order to eliminate major irregularities which are a major threat to fish stock in Irish waters and EU waters in general, in view of well documented evidence of illegal catches of fish species and undersize fish by Spanish fishing boats and boats registered in other member states but landing their catches in Spain. [3931/98]

As the coastal State most directly concerned Ireland has been to the forefront in pushing for rigorous control and monitoring of fishing activities and fish landings right across the EU. This is essential for the effective management and conservation of fish stocks. I am pressing other member states and the Commission for maximum commitment to fisheries control, and for ongoing co-operation and information exchange between member states on control issues.
