Vol. 487 No. 3

Written Answers. - Pollution Control.

Ulick Burke

Question:

102 Mr. U. Burke asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the measures, if any, his Department or Bord na Móna will take during 1998 to prevent further silting from peat works in the midlands and to restore Lough Derg to a clean unpolluted water way; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4119/98]

This is a matter for Bord na Móna which, under section 27 of the Turf Development Act, 1946, is responsible for taking precautions and making provisions to avoid injury to fisheries during or in consequence of the execution of works.

To ensure that the fisheries of the area are protected, the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board is having discussions with Bord na Móna on this matter.
