Vol. 487 No. 5

Written Answers - Extradition Requests.

Gay Mitchell

Question:

125 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the individual who gave the binding assurance that a person, who is a US citizen, could not be given the death penalty if found guilty of charges for which her extradition from Ireland to Connecticut is currently being sought. [4271/98]

I have received the assurance of the United States Government, conveyed to me in writing by the United States Ambassador, that the death penalty will not be imposed in the case in question. That assurance has been based on formal assurances that have been given by the State's Attorney for the Judicial District of New London, State of Connecticut. Formal assurances have also been given by the Governor of the State of Connecticut and the Chief State's Attorney for the State of Connecticut that the death penalty will not be sought in this case in the event of the subject being extradited.
