Question:

135 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the funding or supports, if any, in place for our competitive swimmers in 1998; the additional funding and supports that will be put in place in view of the recent swimming abuse controversy; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4483/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 133, 134 and 135 together.

I have informed the Irish Amateur Swimming Association, the IASA, that I am suspending any consideration of further funding to the organisation pending the outcome of the independent inquiry now under way.

My Department has issued no grants to the IASA to date this year. Grants allocated to the IASA during the last three years, including high performance grants and grants in respect of participation of members at various international events which were significantly higher in 1997, totalled £143,850 in 1995, £147,554 in 1996 and £230,332 in 1997.
