Vol. 487 No. 5

Written Answers - Asperger Syndrome.

Nora Owen

Question:

137 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will appoint Ballyroan national school, Rathfarnham, Dublin 14, as a mainstream school for children with Asperger Syndrome condition. [4426/98]

My Department has been actively pursuring a proposal submitted by the Asperger Syndrome Association of Ireland Ltd., for a pilot project for children with Asperger Syndrome at Ballyroan national school, Rathfarnham.

The main objective of the project is to carry out an evaluation of the support services required for students with Asperger Syndrome attending mainstream primary schools.

However, I understand that the authorities at Ballyroan national school have now decided to withdraw from involvement in the proposed project.

My Department is continuing to seek a suitable school in the locality in which the proposed project would be established from September 1998.
