Vol. 487 No. 5

Written Answers - Partnership for Peace.

Gay Mitchell

Question:

43 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the reason he opposes Ireland participating in Partnership for Peace. [4284/98]

In response to a question from the Deputy on 4 November last, I stated that I would be open to a debate on this issue in the House, so that the range of views on this matter can be heard. I noted with interest the deliberations of the Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs last week on developments in European security architecture. I welcome the constructive tone of those deliberations. I understand the committee is likely to have further discussions on this subject in the future. I look forward to an open and well informed debate on Partnership for Peace in the House in due course, in the light of the committee's deliberations and conclusions.
