Vol. 487 No. 5

Written Answers - Ministerial Travel.

Billy Timmins

Question:

68 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the plans, if any, he has to visit countries such as Rwanda, Burundi, Zaire and North Korea and any other areas where there are humanitarian problems; if he will visit them in the coming months; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4319/98]

I have no plans to visit any of the countries mentioned. I am very much aware of the humanitarian situations in these countries. Ireland is doing its part at both humanitarian and political level to help address the difficult problems faced.

Emergency humanitarian assistance has been extended to all of the countries mentioned. In addition and where feasible, Ireland assists the efforts of those countries in a post-conflict situation to rebuild their societies through rehabilitation and reconstruction programmes which support reconciliation.
