Vol. 487 No. 5

Written Answers - Coastal Erosion.

Brendan Daly

Question:

72 Mr. Daly asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if his attention has been drawn to the serious coastal erosion adjacent to Seafield pier and Quilty village in County Clare, which is now threatening the pier and private houses in the village; if he will provide funding to deal with the crisis; if he will have arrangements made for engineers from his Department to visit the area to assess the seriousness of the situation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4417/98]

The undertaking of protection works at Seafield-Quilty is among the priority protection proposals submitted by Clare County Council to my Department for consideration under the Operational Programme for Environmental Services 1994-9. I understand the county council is taking a fresh look at the situation and has engaged a firm of consulting engineers to assist in the technical evaluation. The consultants' report will be assessed by my Department when it becomes available, within the context of the limited funding available up to 1999 for coast protection works under the coast protection sub-programme of the Environmental Services Operational Programme.
