Vol. 487 No. 7

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Bernard Allen

Question:

268 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will provide school transport for the five pupils attending Glanmire Community College, Cork who have addresses in Little Island, in view of the fact that there is no pick-up point for those pupils on Little Island which is adjacent to a national primary route and which makes travel to and from the college extremely dangerous and, for the next academic year, there will be seven pupils from Little Island in the college. [5252/98]

Under the terms of the school transport scheme, a special school bus service may be established where there is a minimum of seven eligible pupils within an area which can reasonably and economically be served by a bus route.

There are currently only five eligible pupils from Little Island offering for transport to Glanmire Community College.

However, the possibility of reorganising existing services in this area to cater for the pupils in question is currently under examination by my Department.
