Vol. 488 No. 2

Written Answers. - CARI Foundation.

Alan Shatter

Question:

90 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will provide State funding to the CARI foundation whose workload has substantially increased over the past 12 months in the context of providing advice, support, counselling and therapy for individuals and groups affected by sexual abuse; and, in particular, if he will provide a grant to the foundation of not less than £100,000 for the year 1998. [5483/98]

Funding for services of the kind provided by CARI is channelled through the health boards and is not directly provided by my Department. This position is in line with the role of the Department of Health and Children as set out in the context of the strategic management initiative.

The Deputy may wish to note that I met CARI towards the end of last year. During the course of that meeting, I suggested that CARI should take up the matter of funding directly with the health boards.
